Redmond, WA / Global — Microsoft Copilot is getting a major leap forward in Windows 11 with the rollout of new “agentic” features — notably Copilot Actions — that allow the assistant to carry out tasks on the desktop using natural-language commands, voice or text.
What’s New
- The update introduces the wake-word “Hey Copilot”, enabling hands-free voice activation of Copilot across supported Windows 11 PCs.
- Copilot Vision (itself previously announced) is now being expanded globally: this lets the assistant analyse on-screen content, apps or documents and provide context-aware help.
- Most importantly, Copilot Actions is being previewed: an agentic mode that can act on your behalf, interacting with desktop files, applications and workflows (for example: “find all my vacation photos and make a slideshow”, or “email the summary of that report”).
- These new features are being rolled out in phases, beginning with Windows Insider builds, and will require user opt-in.
Why This Matters
- This marks a shift in how an operating system functions: moving from passive tool to active collaborator. Microsoft calls this evolution toward an “AI PC” — where you speak, the system listens, sees and acts.
- For productivity workflows this could reduce friction: tasks that span multiple apps (files, email, browser) might now be triggered by a single natural language command.
- It also raises questions of trust, security and control: giving an AI assistant permission to act on files or applications changes the risk surface — something Microsoft acknowledges and addresses in its “Securing AI agents on Windows” blog.
What Users Should Know
- These features are opt-in and experimental — users will need to enable them and consent to the level of access the assistant has.
- Older PCs may not support all the new agentic workflows smoothly — although feature availability is stated for all Windows 11 devices, device performance (especially for heavy vision/agent tasks) may vary.
- Users should review settings and permissions for Copilot, especially before enabling agentic capabilities (such as access to files or third-party services).
- Enterprises and IT admins should plan for new privacy/security policies around these features, since AI agents acting on behalf of users introduce new governance considerations.
